Beautiful flowers, picked and tied by the children in the walled garden at the farm. These will be taken to the local harbour town, Portclais, for residents to pick up as a 'random act of kindness'. Each bouquet has a handwritten message from the children. https://t.co/13WUhRAil2

Accelerated Reader

At Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace, we combine the Accelerate Reader and MyOn programmes with the books already in school.

Accelerated Reader is an effective software tool used by an increasing number of schools to foster reading growth. Each child reads a book and completes the Quiz through AR. It encourages students to read widely and independently whilst allowing staff to monitor progress and support where necessary.

The programme is designed to work out a reading level (or STAR reading level). Students then read books within this level – all books in class libraries that are register3ed with AR have a coloured star label on the spine to help them recognise books within their ‘zone’. Students take a quiz on the website after reading each book to assess how well they understood it. Their STAR level is tested every other term to see how they have progressed. Whilst at home, children can also complete these tests and teachers will show children how to do this.

As well as promoting reading and academic achievement, AR is also about enjoyment of reading and endorsing the culture of reading at Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace. We hope that both platforms will help children to broaden their reading genres and help them to find books that they love to read, discuss and share with one another. Your child can access books at home using the MyOn link and then complete their Quiz through AR. Have you completed a book? Don’t forget to complete a book review on MyOn too. Each week a certificates of those who have read the most words, classes who have read the most and a school wide weekly total of words is shared in celebration assembly.
