Year 5 - Summer 1
Key Times
Homework |
Each week, children are expected to learn their spellings which will be sent home on a Friday. The spelling test will then be the following Friday. In addition to this, children are expected to read and complete their Read the Rainbow bookmark and log in to Times Table Rockstars to complete Times Table practise daily. |
PE |
In year 5, the PE days are Tuesday and Thursday for both classes. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing school uniform and they will then change in school. |
Trips |
In the Summer term children in year 5 will be taking a school trip to Westminster Abbey to learning about the history and faith of the location. |
Key Times |
For Year 5, the school day will begin at 8.30, and end at 3.30. Please ensure your child is on time as we complete morning revision each day. |
What are we learning?
English |
In English, we will be reading ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Q.Rauf. We will use this book to support our writing where we will be creating a first-person narrative, diary recount and persuasive letter. |
Maths |
In Maths we will start off the term working with shapes, then move on to position and direction before finishing with decimals. |
Science |
In Science, we are learning about living things and their habitats. We will learn about the life cycle of a plant and the way in which plants reproduce. We will also look at the life cycles of mammals and birds before looking at the life cycles of insects and amphibians. |
Geography |
We will be learning about sustainable cites. We will look at what sustainably is before looking at a sustainable city and what makes it sustainable. We will then bring out learning closer to home and think about how we could make our city and homes more sustainable. |
History |
We will continue our leaning on Vikings. We will look at whether the Vikings deserved their reputation. Children will discuss Viking trade and culture. |
RE |
In RE we will focus on Judaism. We will discuss whether Jewish stories are important. We will learn about the Torah and how it is treated. We also learn about the different parts of the Tanakh. |
Computing |
We will learn about coding. We will recap our previous learning before attempting to create our own Alien Blast game. |
Art |
In Art, we will be completing a topic on sculpture. In this topic we will look at the artists Anish Kapoor and Henry Moore. We will be learning about sculpting with the slab method and creating hollow shapes. We will build on our previous learning of pinch pots and the coil method. |
Mandarin |
In Mandarin, we will revise all our previous knowledge in preparation for the YCT test on 17th may. |
PSHE |
In PSHE, we will be thinking about keeping our mind and body safe. We will look at feeling, emotions, mental health and first aid. |
PE |
We will be focusing on athletics. Children will learn to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities. |
Music |
We will be learning about musical theatre. We will learn about how musicals are made and who is involved in preshow, backstage, and onstage. We will learn four songs from four different musicals and learn a performance for one of them. |
DT |
In Spring term, children will design and create an alarm for a vehicle. This topic will incorporate coding and the children will work with Crumble kits to create their alarm. |
