Key Times 

Homework 

Each week, children are expected to learn their spellings which will be sent home on a Friday. The spelling test will then be the following Friday. Pupils will have to bring back their homework folders and reading books every Wednesday.

PE  

In year 1, the PE day is a Monday and Tuesday for Hippo class.

Tuesday and Thursday for Rhino class.  

Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing school uniform and they will then change in school.  

Trips 

This half term we have book a Freshwater theatre on Wednesday 6th March.

Key Times 

For Year 1, the school day will begin at 8.30, and end at 3.30. Please ensure your child is on time as we start phonics lesson at 8.50am.

 
What are we learning? 

 

English 

In English, we will be reading ‘Emperor’s Egg’, Bob the man on the Moon’, and ‘Aida Twist, scientists.  From this we will be writing Information text, retell and instructions writing.

Maths 

In maths, we will be focusing on addition and subtractions within 20, Place Value within 50, Length & Height, Mass & volume. Pupils will learn to make number bonds to 20, subtract 1 using number bonds, count from 20 to 50, Partitioning into tens & ones.  Compare, measure length using objects and centimetres. Measure, compare mass. Look at full and empty, compare volume.

Science 

In science, we are focusing on Animal. Pupils will learn to:

 •          Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

•           Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.

•           Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, including pets)

Geography 

In Geography, will be focusing on UK weather. Pupils will learn to:

  • identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles
  • use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to: key physical features, including beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season, and weather

History 

Our topic this half term is ‘How have toys and games changed’ 2? The children will learn about changes within living memory revealing aspects of social change in national life.

  • What are toys like today? How do I find out about toys in the past?
  • How are my family’s toys different to mine?
  • How were toys made in the past?
  • How have toys changed over time?

RE 

In RE this half term, we will be learning Why was Jesus welcomed like a king by the crowds on Palm Sunday? Pupils will learn to:

  • What would you do if the King came to visit?
  • How do we welcome special people?
  • What happened on Palm Sunday?
  • How was Jesus welcomed by the crowds?
  • How would Christians welcome Jesus in their town today?
  • Was Jesus always treated like a king?

Computing 

This half term the children our topic will be about Pictograms and Grouping. Pupils will learn to:

  • How can I sort items using a range of criteria?
  • How can I use Purple Mash to sort items?
  • How can I represent data in picture format?
  • How do I contribute to a class pictogram?
  • How do I use a pictogram to record the results of an experiment?
  • How can I demonstrate my learning?

Art 

In art, pupils will be introduced to printing.  

  • Pupils will understand that PRINTING is a process of creating an image or design by transferring ink from a tray to a surface through another medium
  • Pupils will use a range of media/objects to create different printed images.
  • Pupils will recognise how to change the quality of a printed image by varying: the pressure used to apply the ink; the type of object used, and the amount of ink applied to the object.
  • Pupils will identify key features of the work of Sonia Delaunay and Bernice Sydney and use this to inspire their own work.
  • Pupils will be able to use COLOUR & SHAPE to create simple printed designs inspired by the featured artists
  • Pupils will analyse and critique their own work as well as that of great artists

Mandarin 

In Mandarin, the topic this half term is establishment. The children will learn how to say hello, goodbye in Mandarin.

PSHE 

In PSHE we will be learning about Living in the wider world.

Pupils will develop their understanding in:

  • what money is; forms that money comes in; that money comes from different?
  • sources
  • that people make different choices about how to save and spend money.
  • about the difference between needs and wants; that sometimes people may.
  • not always be able to have the things they want.
  • that money needs to be looked after; different ways of doing this

PE 

In Spring 1 children will be learning Tag Rugby

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
  • Participate in team games

Music 

Our topic this half term is High and Lows. Pupils will be learning to:

•           play tuned and untuned instruments musically

•           listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music

•           experiment with, create, select, and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

DT

In DT we will continue our topic, Fruit Salad. Pupils will be taught to:

  • design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria.
  • generate, develop, model, and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, information and communication technology
  • select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining, and finishing]
  • explore and evaluate a range of existing products.
  • evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria
